“If I Hadn’t Come to YES…” | Youth Spotlight

Ethan’s journey with Youth Emergency Services (YES) is a testament to resilience and transformation. Raised in a verbally abusive home and subsequently kicked out by his mother as a teenager, Ethan’s early years were fraught with disappointment and instability.

“I grew up with no real support network. I spiraled after high school, and I had no real direction. I know now that if I hadn’t come to YES, I’d probably be in jail or prison. That’s where I was headed,” Ethan reflects.

Arriving at YES in October 2020, he carried with him deep-seated anger and distrust, lacking both direction and support. However, his 17-month immersion in the YES Transitional Living Program (TLP) became a turning point. Through the program, Ethan not only learned vital life skills but also discovered the power of self-advocacy and autonomy. Repairing his fractured relationship with his mother became a focal point of his growth.

Now, as he embarks on his college journey at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Ethan’s newfound confidence and drive are unmistakable. His story illuminates the profound impact of YES in empowering youth to transcend adversity and forge brighter futures.
