“YES is Where I Landed” | Youth Spotlight
Youth Emergency Services (YES) does more than combat youth homelessness.
We equip Omaha’s young people with the life skills and resources they need to stand on their own two feet. Just ask our current YES program youth.
“I was looking for a place where I could get back on my feet,” they said. “YES is where I landed!”
While couch-surfing with relatives, this youth was tasked with finding somewhere else to live. But they were searching for more than a roof over their head; they wanted to find the necessary skills to live—and thrive—on their own.
While researching housing resources, they came across YES’ Transitional Living Program (TLP)—a program offering youth up to 18 months of residence in independent living-style apartments; designated case managers to help them set and achieve diverse goals; and, of course, the opportunity to develop life skills. This youth applied immediately.
Soon after, they were accepted into TLP. Through the program, they received the housing and community resources they needed—and found the independent living skills they wanted.
The team at YES is very helpful and guiding,” they said. “They have been helpful with getting me a room, getting my own space, helping me get the resources and opportunities I need—but wouldn’t have otherwise gotten.”
But gaining independence does not mean our youth navigate their new living situation alone.
YES equips homeless youth with the resources they need to stand on their own including our dedicated team of youth advocates, case managers, and fellow program youth. Together, they provide a solid support system for the young people seeking our services, including this youth.
“I love meeting other people through the program, knowing I have advocates for me—especially because not many people do,” they said. “We look out for each other and keep each other safe.”
